Everyone loves to see famous names in motorsport, from Ferrari, Mclaren, to Lotus and the Mercedes Silver Arrows. Now it appears that Scotland’s famous team is dusting off the overalls and opening shop for the first time in almost 20 years. Ecurie Ecosse have a fabulous history; double Le Mans winners in 1956 and 1957, C2 class winners of the World Sportscars Championship and Champions of the 1992 British Touring Cars Championship with Tim Harvey in their works Vauxhalls. …

Over the last couple of years there have been some great additions to the stable of GT3 cars competing in championships such as Blancpain, British GT and Belcar, and this year we get to see some hotly anticipated cars racing a full season for the first time.

New to the scene last year this car has already become a firm favorite, and with its sleek curves and fluid styling it’s easy to see why.

This old workhorse is still racing and is still winning races. Although now it’s at the end of its development life this car will slowly be phased out of GT3 racing.

Aston Martin DBRS9

This car is now old and is really starting to show her age, at the last Belcar race of the season at Spa Barwell had one the best races they have ever had; the car had never been quicker around the circuit, record breaking pit stops and no trouble at all and yet this championship winning team only came seventh. No wonder they are changing cars next year! However in its day this car was quick and to this day with a V12 engine and a straight though exhaust the car is still the best sounding car out there.

Aston Martin’s new GT3 challenger is promising to be a classic GT car. Keeping the powerful V12 this new car will be lighter and, hopefully, easier to conduct pit stops on then the old DBRS9. It has yet to be raced in anger so I would expect a few teething problems to begin with but once those are ironed out it will be great to see an Aston at the front again.

McLaren MP4-12C GT3

Unlike Aston Martin, McLaren were able to test their new car at last years Spa 24 hours so I would except this car to be quick out the box. There are a number of teams looking to run the car this year and if you look at McLaren’s racing history and the support package it is offering it is easy to see why. However speaking to a couple of engineers at teams that have taken delivery of their new cars it would seem that the build quality hasn’t been fantastic and the teams have had to do some serious work on the car to rectify build errors. It would seem that McLaren are struggling to supply all their new teams.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3

New last year this car was immediately popular with owners, with its love it or hate it looks (I have to admit that I’m not a fan) and monstrous noise no GT grid would be complete without one of these. I like how Mercedes have managed to keep the gull-wing doors on the GT car and with the combination of a massive 6.3 liter AMG engine and side exhausts the result is that you only hear half the engine which give it  unique sound as it thunders past.

This car can only be described as a weapon. Due to its V8 engine and lightweight chassis it is fast. Last year it was the car to have, the question remains if it is going to continue to hold that title in 2012 after this years performance levelling?

Not only has this been a quick car over the last couple of seasons but it has also been reliable, winning the Spa 24 hours was prove enough of that. However with United Autosports changing cars and moving to McLaren is this a sign that maybe it is not going to be as competitive this year?

Keen to build on their GT1 success Nissan have brought out a GT3 version of their GTR car. Developed by JRM this car should be good but will it be popular? So far their orders numbers would suggest not.

This car has been in development for a while now. Now that the car has more power, more areo and new suppliers hopefully 2012 will be the year when everything comes together for this small British outfit.

Keen to transfer the success of this car in sprint races to endurance racing Reiter Engineering (the people who develop this car) have added a whole host of upgrade packages from better aero, better springs and brakes and perhaps most importantly a brand new gear box. If all these upgrades work the car could well be one to look out for in 2012.

10.  Formula 1 Tribute

This 4 minute video has some great footage from Fangio to Schumacher, with great overtakes, some crashes and brilliant shots of those on the side line. It may have got higher up this list of top ten motorsport videos but the upload quality isn’t as good as others on this list.

9.  Fallen Drivers

Out great sport is built on the shoulders of giants and this film is a fitting tribute to the drivers who gave everything they had for their passion.

8.  WRC – Final Stage

With no TV deal, only 2 full time manufacturers and with one driver dominating, this video makes you remember why the WRC is great, with stunning views, brilliant sounds and crazy driving you just have to love the WRC!

7.  Senna’s onboard lap of Monaco

If you haven’t seen this then where have you been for the last 20 years? This is a masterclass on how to drive Monaco, and in many places one-handed!

6.  The Killer Years

This documentary follows the story of Formula 1 through the 1960s and 70s and takes a look at the safety, or lack of, this amazing sport. It is an eye opening story and a must watch film. It has interviews from all the greats of those days, well the ones that survived, and shows some truly shocking footage.

5.  Motorsport – Life in High Gear

This film made by Antti Kalhola in which he again does his thing, Brilliant footage, great sound track and plenty of emotion, the perfect encapsulation of what motorsport is about.

4.  When Playboys ruled the World

This documentary was created by ITV and follows the story of close friends and champions F1 driver James Hunt and Superbikes Barry Sheen. It looks at the world in which they existed in the 1970s and what the world expected of them. With interviews from Sheen’s wife and sister, Hunts brother, Sir Stirling Moss, the great Murray Walker and some very surprising stories from Max Mosley. It was an easy pick to put this brutally honest film in the top 10 of motorsport videos.

3.  Ecurie Eccosie 24 hours of Spa 2011

I love this video, it gives a really good idea of what it is like to race in a 24 hour race for both the driver and the team all in 6 minutes. This race was a landmark for Ecurie Eccosie as it was the first time the team had raced for over 10 years. Added to that because Spa has no noise restrictions this car was fitted with a straight through exhaust which meant that the 6 liter V12 engine could sing!

2.  Truth in 24 hours

This award-winning film is in 13 parts (the link is the for the first one). It follows the Audi team through the build up and preparations for their 2008 victory at Le Mans, including the 12 hours of Sebring and 1000km of Monza. It tells the story through captivating narration, brilliant interviews of the key players and, of course, great footage.

1.  Every Second counts

This is another film from Antti Kalhola and is a compilation of great quotes from supurb drivers, beautiful footage of cars from F1, WRC, Le Mans, DTM and much more all put together with stirring music. It makes you remember why you love motorsport so much. Thanks Antti.

One option is to follow the example of others before him and join the world of sports car racing.

To give Rubens some encouragement here are the F1 bridesmaids, flops and no hopers that have gone on to win the greatest race of them all, the 24 hours of Le Mans.

There's really not much to it

In it he won the German GP (at the Nürburgring, the last Formula One race there before ‘The Ring’ was made “safer”) and Canadian, came second in Great Britain and Mexico and a third in France, coming 2nd in the championship with 37 points.

Here is the cockpit, It’s a real tight squeeze. See those light green panels on the sides? That’s the fuel tanks. No wonder so many people died.

The car was (and still is) powered by a Ford Cosworth DFV 3.0 V8 which at it’s peak produced 410bhp at 9000rpm.

The Lump

Although not as powerful as its V12 competitors the engine was lighter and as a result had a better power to weight ratio. In addition, by placing load bearing arms to stress the block it became a structural part of the car itself.

You may think that the team attracts sponsors, gets a share of the ticket sales and then pays the drivers. This is not the case (normally).

The simplest way to get paid as a team is to become a factory run or factory backed team. This is where a manufacturer sets up a team, or employs one, to race their cars. Famous examples of a factory team are Ferrari, Audi or Peugeot. A factory backed team would be a team like Oreca. However, even in the high flying world of Formula One this is not the norm.

The very big teams who are not factory backed (like Mclaren, Motorbase or Team Dynamics) are able to attract big enough sponsors to then pay their drivers. Some even have side projects where they are able to sell the technology that they have developed.

All the other teams in motorsport have to get their funding from other sources. This is what most people I talk to about this are surprised about. In nearly every medium to small team (this includes some F1 teams, most GT teams and nearly all other types of racing) the driver pays for his seat. This means that they have to come up with the cash themselves and this is often a very large sum. Take the Ginetta G55 Cup for example, the average budget a diver needs to find to pay the team, pay for fuel and tyres, entry fees and transport is around £120,000. This is not including the money to buy the car in the first place or any damage to the car.

As you can see this is not a cheap sport. This, unfortunately, means that most drivers are not there purely through skill but also through their ability to either raise money through sponsors, or what is more often the case, their families personal wealth.

This means that those with skill but very little money have to find a “Gentleman Driver” to pay for their racing. This is most apparent in GT racing. In GT there are two drivers per car, normally one driver is very rich who pays for the whole operation and then the second driver is employed by the Gentleman Driver to race with him. An example of this is Lord Drayson and Jonny Cocker.

Finally there are some people who just love motorsport and are happy to spend their money setting up a team and going racing, an example being Vita4One and Gulf AMR.

The all new Aston Martin Vantage V12 GT3 in it's Beechdean colours

The Pictures are of the new Aston Vantage V12 GT3. This is the test and development chassis ‘X3′ which Prodrive have sold to Andrew Howard to be ‘factory run’ in the British GT, as of yet I do not have the details about the ‘factory run’ part of the program, but here is some speculation. Rather then Prodrive actually running a new team in the British GT it is more likely that they will farm the business out to a customer team; and if you would endulge my speculation even more Barwell Motorsport would seem a good guess.

Only a couple of days ago Barwell posted on their site that they are going to be running a customer GT3 in the British GT adding that their “long-standing relationship with Aston Martin Racing is set to continue”. At the end of the 2011 season Barwell said farwell to the two Aston Martin DBRS9s that they have been running for the last few seasons, both of which were off to live in private collections, which means that if they are going to continue running Astons they are going to be running a Aston Martin Vantage V12 GT3. This in addition to their history of working with and running Andrew Howard’s DBRS9 in the British GT all suggests that they are partnering up again for 2012.

Now for some history, ‘The Howard’ bought the first ever Aston Martin GT3 car the DBRS9, chassis no X1, the test and development car, from the factory in 2009. Then at the start of 2010 to weigh up his options for the new season he tested ‘X2′ which was the GT2 spec Vantage test car at a circuit in France. Where in slippy conditions went of into the wall and wrote the chassis off! Now at the end of 2011 he buys ‘X3′, I wonder how he’ll get on with this one?!

Most normal people buy normal customer cars, but then who’s collection is going to be worth more then what he paid for it in 40 years time?

If any of this speculation is correct then 2012 looks set to be a great year for the Barwell/Howard partnership with a new (and hopefully) competitive Aston Martin Vantage V12 GT3, a quick driver in Jonny Adams (don’t forget that he won in the old, slow, DBRS9 on its last time out) and Barwells ability to develop new cars (the DBRS9 and vantage GT2).

The last time Mclaren built a GT car it produced the astonishing Mclaren F1 which beat all other cars (including the prototypes) at Le Mans first time out. This time around Mclaren are looking at the highly competitve field of GT3.

True to form Mclaren have looked at everything needed to ensure success. You can read on other blogs and websites about the aero packages, the engine spec and the levels of testing the Mclaren mp4-12c GT3 has been through. This blog is going to look at the customer support provided by Mclaren.

Mclaren has adopted a total “open-doors” policy when it comes to performance and design in dealing with its customers. Engineers from customers such as Gulf Racing have been attending training days at Mclaren’s base in Woking. I have spoken to a couple of engineers running the new Mclaren and they told me how they have been through training days with Mclaren. These days include training on data systems, engine and components such as gear boxes.

On these days Mclaren have been providing a car that has it’s components available for the engineers to play with, the engine removed to show the insides off and gear boxes with cut away sections.

In addition to this Mclaren will be providing support at all major race weekends. They plan to have a service and parts truck at each race of the Blancpain Championship and the FIA GT3 Championship. These trucks will be provided for free (although any parts used will cost!). This means that teams can be confident to have what they need when they need it rather then have to drag around spares for two cars. This is especially useful for a new car that is still in development as teams will not know which parts will be needed more then others.

Mclaren will also provide an engineer to each team over the race weekends, for free. To put this into context and show you how good this service is, Aston Martin charge £1000 per day per engineer. This service will provide a massive boost for teams running the new Mclaren mp4-12c GT3.

These added extras will make the Mclaren mp4-12c GT3 an easy choice for teams looking at which cars to run this coming season.

Put this all together and you can see the determination that Mclaren have to make sure that this car is a success both on the track and off it and being Mclaren you have to take it seriously.

To re-launch Ecurie Ecosse the team tested the waters at last years Total 24hrs of Spa with an Aston Martin DBRS9 GT3 run by Barwell Motorsport. After their success there they are now looking to do a full season in the British GT. They are planning to continue their partnership with Barwell Motorsport, running two cars and driven by the four drivers who were at Spa; Alasdair McCaig, Andrew Smith, Oliver Bryant, and Joe Twyman.

As of yet nothing has been confirmed (see below for latest updates), at the time of writing the team are in the process of finalizing their financial support. When I spoke to Andrew last weekend he told me that the budget is close to being finalized and they are starting to make the hard decisions of what car to run. The team favor the BMW Z4 but it maybe too pricey for the Scottish outfit but it is still too early to rule anything out.

I for one really hope this team does well, they are a great bunch of lads who are truly passionate about their racing and looking to revive a grand old name in motorsport.

UPDATE 20/02/2012:

Ecurie Ecosse have confirmed today that they will continuing their partnership with Barwell Motorsport in 2012 and competing in both the Blancpain Endurance series and the British GT. The team will be using the BMW Z4 GT3 in both championships.

Their Pro-Am Blancpain campaign will be headed by Andrew Smith and Joe Twyman while Oliver Bryant and Alasdair McCaig will be competing in the British GT championship.

Team boss Hugh McCaig said that, “This is a very exciting development for Ecurie Ecosse.  We looked at a number of options for 2012 following the race at Spa last year, but I believe with the BMW Z4 and the team at Barwell we have absolutely the right combination for success.  We also have a team of ambitious and talented young drivers, who have shown their commitment to this programme through a tireless effort to put the deal together in an extremely challenging economic environment.  Ultimately we want to be back at Le Mans, and this is a fantastic step in the right direction.”
